Back to photography tip Wednesday, and the ever important question of whether to hire 1 or 2 photographers?
This is a tough question, and one that you should give a lot of thought. Dan and I LOVE shooting together! You get both sets of our creative eyes capturing your event, both of us in 2 different places at all times getting different angles, and a little more energy from us since we are both there sharing the work load. But, we are both capable of handling the job flying solo and delivering gorgeous results.
The main thing to consider when deciding between hiring 1 or 2 photographers is how large your event will be? We normally suggest that if you are going to have over 100 guests, two photographers is the way to go. This takes in to account how many different moments will be happening simultaneously, and the amount of people needing coverage.
Other things to take in to consideration are whether your ceremony and reception are in the same location, your budget, or whether you will be getting ready in the same spots? If you are ever in question about what you need, the plan of the whole day is something to discuss with your photographer because this will help them advise you on what would be best for your event coverage.
We would recommend that you request to see the second photographers portfolio, if they help second shoot with the main photographer you are speaking to and their work isn’t on the main photographers website or in their books. This way you know you are getting a second shooter whose work you like. It is also important to know the difference between a second photographer/shooter and an assistant. An assistant will help the photographer carry equipment, manage people during the portrait session, and possibly shoot during important moments-such as cake cutting. A second photographer will shoot the entire event, and should be on the same or at least a close level photographically speaking.
You should also consider whether or not the 2 photographers normally work together as a team or not. This can make a big difference in regards to the photographers timing and flow, and how their images will look together. For instance, Dan and I know exactly where the other one is and what they are shooting without even speaking to one another. We also see the world very differently, but it meshes well when we put them all together.
Ultimately, it is up to you, but hopefully this helps, and if you have any other questions about how to decide between 1 or 2 photographers let us know:)
