We photographed local Charleston entrepreneurs Mike Ray of Normandy Farm Artisan Bakery, David Merritt and Jaime Tenney of Coast Brewery, Nicole Rager of Nicole’s Nutty Goodness, and Hank Weed of Caribrew Cold Press Coffee for an article in the Charleston Scene by Matthew Godbey. Owning your own business is hard work, and it was extremely rewarding to photograph such talented and dedicated individuals. They have all made their dreams their own reality, which takes a lot of courage and possibly a little bit of crazy;). It is really a pleasure living in Charleston where so many small businesses live and thrive. Here’s to local business and local talent!

2010 Survivors Celebration

The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® held their Survivors Celebration March 7th at the Embassy Suites in North Charleston. This was our second year photographing the event, and it is always such an honor to be a part of it. The guest speaker was SC Poet Laureate, Marjorie Wentworth. She read some of her beautiful poetry and signed the books each of the survivors received. There was tea and tasty treats, Bonnie Hancock was honored with the 2010 Charlene Daughtrey Award, and the celebration culminated with the beautiful candle lighting ceremony. Charleston Scene Polaroids

We decided to shoot Polaroids for some of the up and coming people featured in the 2 part series of Charleston Scene magazine’s launch issue. Since part of the magic of the Polaroid is watching the image appear right in your hand, we thought it would fun to watch it in a stop motion video. Thanks to Nick Jenkins and his spectacular music skills we put this little bit together. Hope you enjoy, and you can see the final Polaroid images below…

For those of you interested, we rigged the Polaroid so that we could use our own flash. We taped off most of the Polaroid flash, but left some open so that it could trigger our other 2 larger strobes. We used an alien bee to light the curtain and give it a spotlight look, and then we used our white lightning to light the subject. We also pulled out our Jimi Hendrix poster that is bigger than life size to use as a large fill card…thank goodness for Jimi;) Hope you all enjoy, and can’t wait to see what else Charleston Scene has in store for the Lowcountry!

Debut of Charleston Scene magazine

We were SO excited to get our newspaper today (and yes, we still have a subscription to the local newspaper) and check out the new Charleston Scene magazine! Marcus Amaker did an outstanding job, along with all the other contributors to the premiere edition. The cover story is part 1 of 2, so here are some of the “Locals We Love” from part 1. Be on the lookout for some more photos from part 2 and some Polaroid fun:) And if you read this before 7:30pm tonight head over to Fish restaurant for the launch party.

Since we are in the process of moving our office and are without proper internet access until tomorrow, we are having to handle all of our business via our iPhones. This got us thinking about how truly amazing these little things are. They really do everything, from syncing up our calendars to sending emails. Pink in the Rink

This past Saturday the South Carolina Stingrays partnered with the The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to fight breast cancer in the Lowcountry. They hosted the 4th annual Pink in the Rink. The ice was pink, the hockey sticks were pink, even the jersey’s were pink! Fun was had by all, and it was a full house with a record crowd of 6,801. Charleston Scene magazine

The marvelous Marcus Amaker has been working long and hard on the upcoming premiere of Charleston Scene magazine. It debuts March 11, 2010 and will be in full color and 60+ pages. It will cover local theatre, music, the arts, movies, poetry, and food. We were honored to photograph the cover story for the launch issue. Marcus put together a short preview of the photos in this video. Be on the lookout, should be pretty amazing…

My Poker Face…

So, apparently last Friday was National Lady Gaga Day on Facebook. In celebration of the artist, hundreds of fans dressed up and gathered around Marion Square in downtown Charleston SC for a 30 minute dance party. The event sold t-shirts as a fundraiser for Haiti relief, and collected donations for the American Red Cross. I decided to head over to work on my on-going project Trip the Light Fantastic. The dance floor was full of energy, and I even caught myself toe tappin’ a bit too;).
